| The Simplest Craft Tools: Candles |
|
A candle can be one of the simplest yet most powerful props available to the working practitioner of the magical arts. In itself, the candle requires little in the way of ritual or ceremony. This popular craft tool can be obtained easily as many aspects of life embrace their uses. Few department stores are without a varied selection of sizes or colors of candles to choose from. Candle magic can be very basic and does not require huge amounts of space. In Western culture especially, nearly everyone has worked a ritual of candle magic whether conscious of the fact or not. The childhood custom of blowing the candles out on their birthday cake contains all three of the ingredients of magical work. Concentration is invoked to blow them out. Making a wish is Visualization as they work to see the end result of their wish and Will Power comes into play as they hope to see their desire come true. Basic and untrained, but magic nonetheless. In the working of conscious candle magic, the size and shape of the candle is not as important as you may be led to believe. A simple shaft is usually better as large, ornate, or oddly shaped candles can create distraction from the focusing work at hand. It is important though, to always use a new, 'virgin' candle for each spell or ritual you do. This is critical to avoid the vibrational absorption of other spells or, worse yet, the patterns of a mundane nature if you have recycled one used for mere lighting. Buying your candles is quite acceptable practice and has a long cultural tradition. While they work quite well, there are those who prefer making their own candles. As with any craft tool, this will add an element of your own vibrational pattern being set into the candle for an extra boost of personal power. It also gives the practitioner absolute control over color, size and scent. Candle making is such a popular arts and crafts item that finding adequate supplies and molds is within reach of nearly everyone. There are only two basic rituals that are important in the use of candles for magical workings. In order to dedicate the candle to your magical work, there is the process of 'dressing' the candle. This is the act of rubbing a proper oil or scent onto the candle itself. It is a process of fine-tuning the object towards a specific end. Natural oils are best as they are pure substances. The vibrational energies contained in these oils can imbue the candle with the extra focus of your work. It adds to and compliments the vibrational energies of the color of the candle as well. The other important aspect of the candle magic is that, barring a ritual that requires it be burned a specific time for a number of days, the candle should be stationed in such a way that it can safely be burned completely down in the execution of your spell work. This does not mean you must stay in a trance all this time but that at the conclusion of your spell casting, it should not be put out but allowed to give the entirety of its energy to the execution of your spell. You may get up when done with your work, just make sure that there is no potential hazard with letting them burn themselves out. Candle magic is a quite efficient form of utilizing natural and elemental energies within your craft work. Unlike most of the elemental forces, whose energies can mostly be observed only in secondary ways by their effect on the surroundings, fire is a visible and active energy form. Fire is a changeable energy which is very useful in driving your desires into reality as it sits on the border between the material world and the world of spirit. This makes a candle flame very useful also as a focus during deep thought or meditation. The light is not so strong as to hurt the eyes as you stare into it for aid in creating the state that removes conscious distractions from your mind. From the most remote past, fire was one of the first elemental powers we humans leaned to control and use. It is still one of the strongest natural forces we are able to access for magical work. Not only will a simple candle add power to your magical workings, the soft light and warmth will set up an ambiance of comfort and pleasure to your surroundings as you manipulate the reality around you.
