A lot of witches like to use witch-stones for divination and spell casting and the Witch's Runes are some of the easiest and simplest to make and use as there are only 13 basic runes. Some witches will add stones as they develop along in the Craft in order to work very simple and effective spells whether at home on their altar or while they are on the go.
The material that is used to make these runes purely depends on the witch's personal preferences. They can be made using stones, wood, bone, potter's clay, or even Fimo. Whatever you decide to make your runes from then you may want to also obtain either some acrylic or enamel paint in either basic black or whatever color, or colors, that suits your fancy. If you really want to take the time and effort you can carve or burn the runes into wood or bone. The easiest material for making your runes with would be potter's clay, play-dough or Fimo. You can press the symbols into the any of these materials and once they are dry bake them in a regular oven on low heat. You can use paint to color in the symbols after the rune stones are baked, or leave them au-natural.

The rune alphabet known as Elder Futhark is an old Germanic language form used by the tribes of northern Europe. It was first chronicled by Roman historians around 100 B.C.E. and was still in common use through the sixteenth century Common Era. Inscriptions in runic Futhark have been discovered as far away as North America and lends proof that Viking explorers had traveled there long before Christopher Columbus made his epic voyages to the West Indies.
The old Germanic people realized that words have power and the symbols of their alphabet were capable of being used in a number of oracular and talismanic ways. The language as written could be placed right to left or left to right. Some forms included both orientations within the same text on alternating lines. Each character as well as being incorporated into the words of their language had a specific meaning and history.

The ability to maintain a strong focus with a determined will is an essential aspect of spell casting. As an extremely effective focus for concentrating your will and intent is through the creation and use of a sigil. Basically a sigil is a symbol made up of a variety of geometric, pictorial or abstract designs which are used to signify a specific name or concept.
In the traditional medieval ritualistic and ceremonial magic systems sigils were used to represent the names of the various angelic and demonic spirits that were called forth in their work. The Lesser Key of Solomon for example lists dozens of sigils that represented the true names of many of the high ranking spirits of Hell and that through use of that 'true' name could gain a measure of control over the spirit. Other forms of kabalistic magic as well as ancient Jewish mysticism made great use of formalized sigils as a focus for the powers and entities they worked with. Often these 'names' were inscribed in talismans and magical tools to imbue a bit of the spirit of the named entity into the object.
