There is power in words and a name especially can not only define the entity it is applied to but also to an extent give one power over that entity. This has been a knowledge tradition at least as far back as we have a recorded history. While it is likely a much older belief, the ancient Egyptians wrote of this power in names. According to even the most ancient of creation stories, the universe came into existence due to the divine source uttering its name.
In many aboriginal cultures it was customary to give a child a temporary name that could be used until they came of age. At this time either a tribal elder or Shaman would give the person their 'real' name which was not intended to be shared except with the person's most trusted loved ones. A 'use' name was provided for everyday mention and identification but, with it not being their 'real' name, could not be used magically to harm or control them.
Magicians and Witches are quite aware that this power in words and names exists. When coupled with a piece of a person’s hair and their name, it is possible to forge a direct link to that person and attempt to influence or harm them. The ancients may not have known about DNA but that unique code in every cell of a person's body does provide the means of focus required for magical control.
An essential element of ritual and ceremonial magic is the use of the proper names of the gods, demons, angels, djinn or other etheric entities. Without the correct enunciation of the name of the power you are trying to contact, the best you can hope for is that your bungled conjuration will be ignored.
With the many uses for a name that can be made, it is not only traditional, but practical as well, to take on or have chosen by your group, a new name that you can keep safe and secret from all but a trusted few. While the lists of names available are almost endless, traditional names of Gods, animals, elementals, heroes and legends are the most popular names to take on as you create your magical self.
Your name will be important, as it is the new definition of you. Unless you are in a group or culture that insists on giving it to you, you would do well to meditate for a while on what would best suit and describe you. Through quiet meditation and contemplation you will be more likely to come to an understanding of what name would be right for you. Be careful that you are fully aware of the attributes given to the name you choose. As a word of Power you may find the name changing you through its influence. A healer, for example, would not want to take on the name and attributes of a warrior.
Finding your new 'real' name can be an exciting adventure of self-discovery. Once you have determined the name you wish to be known by to the divine force you should hold a ritual of dedication on yourself to state your intent and identity. Even if you never share this name with anyone, it is the name you will use in your spell work and conjurations. In any place where you must name yourself rather than use a pronoun, that is the name you should use. Regardless of what your birth certificate or driver's license states, the magical, etheric realm will recognize you with your magical name.
If you are concerned that your magical name could be easily figured out and used against you, create a multi-part name and form it into a coded 'wizard's lock' that must be unraveled before it can be used against you. This extra layer of protection around what is now your real name should ease any lingering doubts.
As an element of developing your abilities in either magic or the Craft, taking on a special new name can help you develop the confidence that is so necessary in using the magical influences to help create the reality around you to your desires.
