Empowerment of the Feminine

After several thousand years of patriarchal domination and rule in both the secular and religious institutions of the world it is small wonder that belief systems are reemerging that seek to balance the duel nature of humanity. Especially in the realm of religious beliefs, the role given to women has for too long been one of servitude and unimportance. The rise of modern Witchcraft and the Wiccan movement can be seen as an attempt at regaining a natural equality between the genders.

Our modern culture, especially in Europe and North America, puts a high value on freedom of choice and equality for everyone. It is a natural extension of this philosophy that comes into conflict with the majority of the mainstream religions that have held sway across much of our history. As the idea of masculine monotheism spread its way across the planet, usually at sword's point, the cultures that accepted the divinity of the feminine aspect were destroyed and demonized.

With hundreds of years of this type of conditioning it is not surprising that society on the whole has trouble comprehending a spiritual system that empowers the feminine aspect. The 'father knows best' syndrome is hard to break. But nature is a duality and most life forms do manifest both genders. Since spirit is supposedly an extension of life it would stand to reason that it should follow the nature of life.

The patriarchal religions base their control on a rigid set of dogmatic traditions and rules of behavior. The developing culture of modern Wicca contains very little in the form of dogma and very much on the principles of self-discipline and self-responsibility. The old patriarchy pushes the idea that 'Father loves you but will punish you if you misbehave'. The emerging Matriarchy states that 'Mother loves you and wants you to become the best you can'.

Wicca seeks to teach the individual how to control themselves and recognize that life is a natural process. It embraces only a loose system of guidelines and suggestions for how to go about this and has no need for the individual to conform to a recognizably similar pattern of behavior. Wicca treats the divine force as a helpful friend rather than a controlling power. While both the God and Goddess form is revered in Wicca, the feminine aspect is more prominent for the power of creation and birth it embodies.

The traditional patriarchy is averse to giving women any power or place at all in their hierarchy. It is little wonder that the modern youth turn towards a divinity that welcomes them equally whether male or female. This creates fear in the old established order and they view the turning to a new way of accepting the divine as a 'rebellion' against their control. It seems impossible for them to understand that preference for the creative 'goddess' form of divinity is not a rejection of the authoritarian 'god' form but a way to embrace a greater totality in their understanding and striving for the divine essence.

The greatest misunderstanding the traditional patriarchs have towards the empowerment of the feminine aspect is their fear of losing control of the population. It seems an almost alien concept that this system seeks rather to teach people how to control themselves. As long as there are people there will be both viewpoints on the divine and its position in human existence. With the growing acceptance of the feminine there will hopefully be the birth of a new balance that allows 'god' an equal place in forming a more understanding and peaceful humanity.
